LONDON – 20 May 2026: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Tuesday urged the implementation of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan in line with agreed phases, ensuring both sides fulfill their commitments.

“You have the whole Trump peace plan based on mutual commitments and responsibilities from the two sides. So, we have to focus on that and we have to push for that,” Abdelatty said during an interview with CNN host Christiane Amanpour.

Abdelatty responded to questions about demands for Hamas’ disarmament or decommissioning of weapons under the plan, saying “they have to” do that as “this is part of the agreement.”

He, however, said Hamas has asked for “specific policies” to be fulfilled by the Israelis in order for that to be achieved, including an end to targeted assassinations against Hamas members.

Hamas has also called for the completion of the first phase’s provisions, particularly the rehabilitation of hospitals, clinics and schools, among other facilities, he said.

Abdelatty said efforts should focus on completing the first phase of the agreement, including sending at least 600 trucks of humanitarian aid daily into Gaza, while moving ahead with second phase, which includes weapons decommissioning and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

He affirmed that Egypt has hosted meetings with Hamas members several times in recent weeks to “push very hard” for the plan’s implementation.

Abdelatty said “sure” in response to a question on whether he thinks both sides are failing to meet their obligations.
