Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, the President-Designate of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), which was headed by the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs on the sidelines of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Minister Shoukry stressed during the event the importance of addressing the issue of loss and damage, which has become a recurring phenomenon around the world and is manifested in several forms such as severe weather events that result in great human and material losses and damages.
The Egyptian initiative sits the ambition to treat and recycle at least 50% of solid waste generated in Africa by 2050, which will contribute to reducing the generation of greenhouse gases resulting from such waste, and reduce the overall impacts of waste pollution on human health, biodiversity, food systems and resource scarcity.
Between 2010-2022, the number of Africans affected by droughts amounted to at least 172.3 million, and the ones affected by floods amounted to 43 million, the Minister said.
“The Egyptian Government recognizes the huge responsibility of organizing a successful [the 2022 UN climate conference (COP27)] Conference,” said Dr. Samir Tantawy, a climate change expert at the United Nations Development Program.
The programs will include one-day trips, cruises and visits to natural protectorates, among others.
The meeting focuses on Africa priorities to COP 27, said the ministry in a statement.
