The visit follows President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to localize maritime industries and strengthen partnerships with the private sector. It aimed to review the progress of 10 "Azm" class tugboats, each with a bollard pull of 90 tons, and 12 deep-sea fishing vessels.
Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said that the transit sends a reassuring message to the maritime community regarding the stability of navigational conditions in the region. “The Suez Canal will remain the safest and most efficient artery for global trade,” he affirmed.
During the visit, Admiral Rabie toured ONEX Shipyard’s facilities, including its workshops, technical training centers, maintenance docks, and construction yards. He was briefed on the shipyard’s activities in building and manufacturing a variety of marine vessels, as well as the technologies used in shipbuilding and in converting ships and marine units to operate on clean fuels alongside conventional fuels.
Maersk and the SCA reviewed the regional geopolitical situation. Maersk CEO said that in light of the encouraging developments in both Gaza and the Bab el-Mandeb region, Maersk will begin taking steps to resume navigation along the East–West corridor via the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, with the aim of gradually returning transit operations to normal.
Rabie noted that the Suez Canal Authority possesses a robust industrial base, including multiple shipyards and marine service companies specializing in the construction and maintenance of various types of marine units.
Admiral Rabie announced that a cooperation protocol is expected to be signed soon between the three parties. The agreement will outline responsibilities and tasks, and set the framework for completing the project's technical and financial studies.
The vessel was towed and directed by four tugboats belonging to the canal and carrying a team of senior SCA guides, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Osama Rabie said.
