CAIRO – 18 June 2026: Egypt welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that the agreement would mark a “major turning point toward a new phase of de-escalation, confidence-building and cooperation.”

In a statement on Thursday, the Egyptian Presidency underscored the “critical importance” of the agreement signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in reducing tensions, preventing further escalation and restoring security and stability across the Middle East.

The Presidency praised Trump's “leadership, wisdom and commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means, as well as his efforts to reach a mutually acceptable text for the MoU.”

The Presidency also commended Iran's decision to engage positively in the process by signing the agreement.

The Presidency further highlighted the role of regional partners in facilitating the deal, expressing appreciation for the efforts of Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye in helping secure the memorandum of understanding.

Egypt expressed hope that the MoU would be “fully implemented in both letter and spirit,” paving the way for a final and sustainable agreement that addresses the concerns of all parties and supports efforts to achieve lasting security and stability in the region.

Egypt Hopes for Wider Peace Gains

Egypt hopes that the latest development related to the end of the war with Iran will help create favorable conditions for addressing regional conflicts, particularly the Palestinian cause

The Presidency described the Palestinian cause as “the core of the conflict in the Middle East.”

It stressed that “a decisive and final resolution of the Palestinian cause represents one of the fundamental pillars for achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.”

Egypt reaffirmed its appreciation for Trump's sustained efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, it expressed hope that the recently concluded MoU would lead to a complete halt to Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, and respect for the country's unity and territorial integrity.

Looking ahead, Egypt said it hopes upcoming technical talks between Washington and Tehran will produce more comprehensive and durable understandings that help reinforce regional stability and reduce tensions.

The Presidency added that Egypt stands fully prepared to contribute to the success of the negotiations.

It reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to efforts aimed at enhancing regional security and stability and supporting peaceful conflict resolution in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter.

US, Iran Sign Initial Peace Deal

The presidents of the US and Iran both signed an initial peace agreement overnight aimed at ending the war between the two countries. The deal allows the deal to take immediate effect while negotiations continue on a comprehensive final settlement.

The MoU provides for the "immediate and permanent termination of military operations" on all fronts, including in Lebanon.

It also outlines a framework for addressing Iran's nuclear program, reopening shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz, and lifting sanctions on Tehran.

Egypt and other regional partners have pushed for a diplomatic settlement to end the escalation in the Middle East, which disrupted global energy markets and heightened regional tensions.
