CAIRO – 10 April 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held talks on the recent US-Iran ceasefire, developments regarding the Strait of Hormuz, and Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
During a phone conversation on Friday, the two leaders affirmed the necessity to preserve stability in the Middle East, the Presidency said in a statement.
US-Iran Talks
El-Sisi called for building on the ceasefire agreement to preserve regional peace and stability and launching a serious negotiation process to resolve outstanding issues.
He highlighted Cairo’s intensive efforts with various parties to halt de-escalation.
Meanwhile, the president reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for the security and stability of Arab states, denouncing any infringement on their sovereignty and their people’s resources.
Meloni, for her part, expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s efforts to consolidate the ceasefire, the statement said.
She further underscored the need to ensure the success of the US-Iran negotiations taking place in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, to reach a final agreement that would end the war in the region.
Reopening Hormuz Strait
The Italian prime minister emphasized the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation without imposing fees.
She also highlighted the need to ensure the security of Gulf states and reach an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program that includes relevant guarantees.
She urged taking all necessary measures to prevent renewed conflict, stressing Italy’s keenness to strengthen political coordination and cooperation with Egypt to achieve these objectives.
Achieving Lebanon Ceasefire
Discussing developments in Lebanon, Meloni said Italy looks forward to the launch of direct negotiations leading to a ceasefire.
She said Hezbollah had made the wrong choices, while the Israeli response had exceeded the bounds of legitimate self-defense, the statement read.
Bilateral Relations
El-Sisi and Meloni also discussed bilateral relations between Egypt and Italy and ways to further enhance them across various fields, particularly in trade and economic sectors.
Their talks also covered cooperation in combating irregular migration with Meloni expressing her appreciation for Egypt’s tangible efforts in this regard.
