CAIRO – 28 September 2025: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s full backing for United Nations agencies operating under extremely difficult conditions in Gaza, in light of Israeli targeting of UN facilities and operations.
Abdelatty underscored this commitment as he met on Saturday with Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
The foreign minister affirmed Egypt’s continued backing of the secretary-general and UN agencies, foremost among them the United Nations Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, underscoring its role as indispensable.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, Abdelatty called for intensifying efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the population.
He noted President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s appreciation for US President Donald Trump’s commitment to working with regional leaders to end the war in Gaza and open political and developmental prospects.
The foreign minister strongly rejected any proposals that could lead to the displacement of Palestinians or the liquidation of the Palestinian cause, condemning Israeli acts of killing and starvation.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s adherence to establishing an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as a cornerstone for stability in the Middle East, and welcomed the recognition of the Palestinian state by numerous countries.
Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s plan to host an international conference for the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, in cooperation with the UN, the Palestinian Authority, and international partners, to mobilize support for the reconstruction projects in Gaza.
The foreign minister praised the UN secretary-general’s fair and wise positions on various international and regional issues.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for the UN’s role in preserving international peace and security and addressing growing global challenges.
Guterres commended Egypt’s role as a key actor in the multilateral system, its firm commitment to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, and its persistent efforts to enhance peace and security, support development, and uphold international law.
He also lauded Egypt’s vision and efforts toward achieving stability in the Middle East.
Besides Gaza, the foreign minister reiterated Egypt’s firm position in supporting Sudan’s security, stability, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He stressed the need to preserve and support the Sudanese national institutions, intensify efforts to lift the siege on El Fasher city, and end humanitarian suffering.
Abdelatty emphasized the need to continue advancing the political process in Libya in a manner that preserves Libyan ownership of the Libyan solution.
He highlighted the necessity for holding presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya concurrently at the earliest opportunity, while ensuring the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries to achieve stability.
On Iran, the foreign minister briefed Guterres on Egypt’s diplomatic efforts that contributed to the agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, signed in Cairo, to resume technical cooperation.
He noted that Egypt’s recent intensive efforts aim to de-escalate tensions and create conditions for resuming negotiations between the two parties.
