UN senior humanitarian Gaza coordinator visits Rafah crossing, vows to ensure further aid delivery

CAIRO – 17 January 2024: UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag made a visit to the Rafah border crossing on Wednesday.

In press remarks at the crossing, Kaag vowed to work to ensure the delivery of the largest possible aid to people of the Gaza Strip, Al-Qahera News reported.

Kaag expressed appreciation for the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) for their efforts in preparing large quantities of aid, which are destined for Gaza.

Meeting defense minister

Earlier today, Kaag and her accompanying delegation met with Mohamed Zaki, Egypt’s Minister of Defense and Military Production, during which they discussed the situation in Gaza.

Discussions revolved around means to coordinate continued efforts of delivering humanitarian aid and relief materials in sufficient quantities to the people in Gaza, the Egyptian Military Spokesman, Gharib Abdel Hafez, said in a statement.

Zaki, also Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, and Kaag highlighted the severe lack of basic needs in the strip as a result of the continuous military operations.

The defense minister underlined the firm Egyptian stance toward the Palestinian cause in line with the international legitimacy resolutions, reiterating categorical rejection of attempts to displace the Palestinian people.

Furthermore, Zaki highlighted Egypt’s keenness to coordinate with all regional and international parties to achieve settlement and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the strip’s population.

For her part, Kaag praised the Egyptian efforts to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, expressing her aspiration for the success of the ongoing international efforts to achieve ceasefire in the strip.

Meeting Egyptian FM

On Tuesday, the UN senior humanitarian Gaza coordinator met with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, during which she gave an overview of her priorities and vision amid the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza.

During the meeting, Shoukry and Kaag stressed the necessity to boost humanitarian aid flow to Gaza in sufficient quantities to meet the urgent needs of the Gaza population. They also affirmed the need to support the continuation of services provided by hospitals, relief agencies, and other service facilities.

Shoukry highlighted Egypt’s commitment to ensuring continuous delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza since the start of the crisis despite the obstacles deliberately placed by the Israeli side.
