The government said the move comes in line with directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to expedite the submission of family law bills for both Christians and Muslims, as well as a family support fund bill, to parliament.
The foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar warned that the legislation marks “a dangerous escalation.”
The revised articles, the Presidency stated on Wednesday, address the reasons for those objections and strengthen safeguards for the protection of rights and public freedoms.
The decree was published in the official gazette “Al Waqa’ Al Massriya”.
He who releases dangerous materials or waste the territorial water or in Egypt’s exclusive economic zone shall be punished with life imprisonment and a fine of not less than LE 5 million and not more than LE25 million.
