CAIRO -1 May 2017: The number of Indian tourists visiting Egypt increased by 34.2 percent during the first quarter of 2017, said Ismail Amer, director of Egypt’s tourist office in Mumbai, India.

He said that tourist nights spent by Indians in Egypt have increased by a whopping 205 percent in March.

The tourism industry is a main pillar of the Egyptian economy and one of the main sources of foreign currency. The sector has been struggling ever since the 25 January revolution in 2011 on the back of political instability. It was hit hard by the downing of a Russian airliner over Sinai in October 2016, killing all 224 people on board.

The government has been working hard to revive the sector through promotion campaigns and enhancing security in tourist areas and airports.
