The New Year is almost here and you probably have some goals and changes to work on. If putting down your phone and checking it less is one of the things you have in mind then social media detox is what you need.

There is no denying that social media has taken over so much of our everyday lives. Whether it is the endless scrolling on Instagram, the non-ending videos on YouTube, or the constant urge to keep on checking what’s happening on Facebook, so much of our time is wasted.

For people whose jobs are somehow dependent on social media, it is nearly impossible to quit social media altogether, however, you can reduce the time spent on social media. But if your job isn’t really dependent on it, you’re lucky it will be a lot easier for you.

How to know that you need a social media detox?
If you spend most of your day on social media that it begins affecting your work, relationship, and other areas of life, then you need a social media detox. Also, constantly comparing your life to others is another sign that you need a social media cleanse.

Why do you need a social media detox?
• To focus better on your goals
• To improve your mental healthy
• To have more time for other important things
• To improve your memory and attention span
• To catch up on things you miss and get more in touch with people

Tips to start your social media detox:
1. Monitor how much time you spend on certains apps and delete those that consume your time the most.
2. Break the habit of constantly reaching for your phone by leaving it in another room or turning off your notifications.
3. Spend more time connecting with your surroundings and ditch the phone while spending time with family and friends. Be more present in the moment.
4. Replace social media with other hobbies such as reading, meditation, art classes, or sports.
5. Find a morning habit that replaces grabbing your phone first thing when you wake up like journaling, reflecting, stretching, or even taking a look outside of your window.

When to get back to social media?
The deciding factor here is you. You know yourself better to evaluate whether you took enough time as a break to help you get back to social media more moderately and consciously.
