Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia Make Historic Royal Visit to Luxor.
In a dazzling royal moment, King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia paid a historic visit to Luxor — the first by a Spanish monarch to Egypt since 2014.
The King and Queen toured the West Bank under the night sky, standing before the majestic Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, where they snapped selfies and commemorative photos against the newly unveiled night-lighting project that illuminated the ancient site nestled in the cliffs of Qurna.
The King and Queen were welcomed at Luxor International Airport on Thursday evening by Luxor Governor Abdel Muttleb Emara and Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy, both hailed the visit as a historic event that reaffirms Luxor’s status as the capital of cultural tourism worldwide.
During their stay, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are set to tour several archaeological sites and landmarks in Luxor, exploring the magnificence of ancient Egyptian civilization and its unique treasures.
The visit follows their official reception in Cairo on Wednesday by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, continuing the Spanish royal family’s program in Egypt.
Luxor Governor stressed that the King and Queen’s visit sends a powerful message to the world about Egypt’s safety and stability, while boosting confidence among international visitors. He expressed optimism that the trip would invigorate tourism in Luxor and across Egypt — particularly from Spain and Europe.
