Surface area cultivated with wheat in world's largest importer Egypt is 3.5M feddans

CAIRO – 18 January 2021: The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation revealed Monday that the total surface area cultivated with wheat has recorded 3.1 million feddans out of 3.5 million feddans targeted by the government.

 

Egypt is the world's largest wheat importer. Its wheat imports dipped to 12.685 million metric tonnes in FY2019/2020 compared to 13.3 million tonnes the year before declining by 615,000 tonnes, according to a report by the US’ Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS).

 

The country's wheat imports are projected to rise to 12.85 million tonnes of wheat in FY2020/2021, while wheat cultivated locally is estimated to record 8.9 million tonnes in FY2020-2021, up 1.5 percent from FY2019-2020.
