CAIRO – 13 June 2026: Egypt on Saturday welcomed a prospective deal between the United States and Iran and urged seizing the opportunity to end the war and promote regional stability, a statement by the foreign ministry read.
During a phone call with US special envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed Egypt’s commitment to working with regional partners to help secure a final deal that addresses the concerns of all parties.
Witkoff praised the intensive efforts made by regional parties, including Egypt, to help advance the negotiations and facilitate an agreement.
The US envoy expressed hope that the deal would contribute to enhancing security and stability across the region, the statement said.
Iran, the US and mediators have signaled that a preliminary peace agreement to end the three-month US-Iran war could be signed within days, although they offered differing timelines and accounts of the proposed deal.
The anticipated deal will reportedly extend the current ceasefire for 60 days, including in Lebanon, during which nuclear negotiations would take place.
US President Donald Trump said a deal with Iran is scheduled to be signed on Sunday, after which he said the Strait of Hormuz would “immediately” open to all maritime traffic.
The diplomatic push follows weeks of escalating hostilities between Washington and Tehran, with US strikes on Iranian targets and retaliatory Iranian attacks across the region.
Trump on Thursday cancelled attacks scheduled on Iran for the third day in a row, asserting that discussions with Tehran “have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved.”
He added that discussions and final points “have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others.”
