CAIRO – 13 June 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directive to transform Egypt into a major regional hub for gas and energy trade is now being realized and bearing fruit, the prime minister said on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference at the end of a visit to Beheira governorate, where he toured the Idku liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, Madbouly said Egypt's advanced gas infrastructure had prompted neighboring countries to view it as a regional center for gas exports and trade.

He highlighted the Idku LNG plant holds infrastructure that sets Egypt apart in the Middle East, highlighting LNG export facilities at both Idku and Damietta.

Idku is the larger of the two, with investment value exceeding $10 billion, he said.

The prime minister highlighted efforts to pipe Cypriot offshore gas to the Idku facility once the project is completed, allowing Cypriot gas to be exported through Egypt.
