WASHINGTON – 31 May 2026: US President Donald Trump has requested changes to a draft nuclear agreement negotiated by his envoys and Iranian officials, Axios reported on Sunday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
A US administration official said Trump is seeking more specific provisions on Iran's nuclear program, including how and when the US gets the material, before approving the proposed deal.
Trump made the request during a Situation Room meeting at the White House on Friday, triggering a new round of discussions between the two sides that could last several days.
The current draft includes an Iranian commitment not to pursue a nuclear weapon and provides for a 60-day period to negotiate detailed nuclear restrictions and US sanctions relief.
Moreover, Trump also wants to amend some of the wording around the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, according to one of the sources.
A White House official told CBS News earlier that Trump “will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his red lines. Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon.”
Trump on Friday said Iran “must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb. The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions” and that the Iranian enriched uranium “be unearthed” and “DESTROYED.”
Meanwhile, Iranian sources have dismissed Trump’s comments, describing them as a mix of “truth and falsehood” and an attempt to present a “manufactured victory,” according to Iran’s Fars News Agency.
The sources denied Trump’s assertion that Iran is dismantling or destroying its nuclear materials, saying the claim had no basis in the draft framework.
They also noted that the agreement includes provisions not mentioned by Trump, including the immediate release of $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets, which they said constitutes a key condition for moving forward with any further negotiations.
