CAIRO – 21 May 2026: The Egyptian and Algerian foreign ministers held talks in Cairo on Thursday, reviewing bilateral relations as well regional de-escalation efforts.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Attaf, reviewed the track of negotiations between the United States and Iran, the Egyptian ministry said in a statement.

Abdelatty stressed the importance of advancing diplomatic solutions, stating that de-escalation and dialogue remain the only option to avoid a scenario of regional chaos.

On Libya, the two ministers urged maintaining the tripartite mechanism of Libya’s neighboring countries, which also include Tunisia, as a key framework for consultation.

They commended the regular convening of the mechanism meetings, pushing for a political solution under purely Libyan ownership and leadership, guaranteeing the unity and sovereignty of the state.

They also highlighted the need to create conditions for holding elections in Libya simultaneously, and affirmed rejection of all foreign interference that obstructs a sustainable solution.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s firm position on the need to respect Sudan’s sovereignty, preserve its unity and territorial integrity, and support its national institutions.

Meanwhile, the ministers urged elevating cooperation in priority sectors, particularly economic, trade, and investment sectors.
