CAIRO – 10 May 2026: Egypt has condemned the targeting of a commercial cargo vessel in the territorial waters of Qatar, expressing full support to Qatari measures to protect maritime navigation.

A drone targeted a cargo vessel sailing from Abu Dhabi, while in Qatari waters northeast of Mesaieed Port on Sunday, according to the Qatari defense ministry.

The attack caused limited fire but no injuries were reported as the vessel continued its journey toward the port, the ministry added.

In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt stressed that attacks on commercial and civilian ships constitute a flagrant violation of international law and the principles of freedom of maritime navigation.

The targeting of such ships also represent a dangerous escalation threatening the security of waterways and global trade, the ministry added.

Egypt expressed its full solidarity with Qatar and support for “all measures it takes to protect its security and sovereignty, and secure maritime navigation.”

Cairo also renewed its warning over the serious repercussions of continued regional escalation on the security and stability of the region.
