MUSANDAM – 22 April 2026: A container ship was fired upon by a gunboat of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps at the Strait of Hormuz, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Wednesday.
The attack occurred approximately 15 nautical miles off Oman’s coast, causing significant damage to the vessel’s bridge but all crew members are safe, the UKMTO added.
The ship’s master said the vessel was approached by a single IRGC gunboat, which did not issue any VHF radio warning before opening fire.
The incident is part of a series of recent attacks by IRGC gunboats on tankers at the Strait of Hormuz, aimed at tightening control over the vital waterway and press for an end to a US blockade on Iranian ports.
It came hours after US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran to allow more time for negotiations to end the war.
Trump said the naval blockade would remain in place until a deal is reached, increasing economic pressure on Tehran, which he said is losing “$500 million a day” amid the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
