CALIFORNIA – 12 March 2026: The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has warned law enforcement agencies in California about the possibility that Iran could retaliate against recent US military strikes by launching drone attacks targeting the US West Coast, according to an internal alert reviewed by ABC News.
The advisory, circulated to police departments in late February, cited intelligence indicating that Iran had considered carrying out a surprise drone operation from a vessel positioned off the US coastline.
According to the notice, the plan involved deploying unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified ship near the US mainland, potentially targeting unspecified locations in California if the United States launched strikes against Iran.
Authorities said the information dated back to early February 2026 and emphasized that details about the alleged attack remain unclear, including its timing, methods, targets or those who might carry it out.
The war in Iran launched by the United States and Israel is nearing its two-week mark, sparking Iranian attacks on regional neighbors and disruptions to navigation in the Gulf and the vital Strait of Hormuz.
