CAIRO – 11 March 2026: The foreign ministers of Egypt and Russia discussed ongoing efforts to de-escalate Middle East tensions, including a draft resolution before the United Nations Security Council addressing the rapid developments in the region.

A Security Council draft resolution is expected to be voted on later Wednesday, reportedly condemning Iran’s missile and drone attacks on several neighbouring countries, which come in response to the ongoing US-Israeli attacks on Iranian cities since February 28.

The draft, obtained by The Associated Press, calls for an immediate halt to the Iranian strikes on these countries.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a telephone call on Wednesday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as part of ongoing consultations between the two countries on rapidly evolving developments in the Middle East and efforts to reduce tensions.

Abdelatty warned of the serious consequences of continued violence and the widening conflict in the Middle East.

He emphasized the importance of coordinated regional and international efforts to de-escalate the situation, noting that ongoing military escalation threatens both regional and international peace and security.

Abdelatty stressed the need to intensify regional and international coordination to contain the conflict and prevent further regional instability.

He underscored the importance of prioritizing diplomacy, dialogue, and de-escalation measures to prevent the region from sliding into wider confrontations that could negatively impact the security and stability of the entire region.
