TRIPOLI – 4 February 2026: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its deep concern over the killing of Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, son of late leader Muammar Gaddafi, near Zintan city in northwestern Libya on Tuesday, urging authorities to ensure swift investigation.

“UNSMIL urgently calls upon the competent Libyan authorities to swiftly and transparently investigate this crime to identify those responsible and bring the perpetrators to justice, and take decisive measures to end this pattern of violence.”

The mission called for all parties to “exercise restraint and to avoid any behaviours which could exacerbate tensions or jeopardize security and stability across the country.”

The UNSMIL expressed strong condemnation of such targeted killings and similar acts of violence, saying these undermine the trile of law and violate the sanctity of human life, while threatening peace and stability in Libya.

The mission highlighted the necessity for a political solution for Libya as a means to long term stability and development.
