CAIRO – 28 January 2026: Egypt, Qatar and Oman called on Wednesday for intensified efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and revive diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran, according to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.
The countries’ positions were communicated in separate phone conversations by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
The ministers reaffirmed the importance of intensifying diplomatic initiatives to reduce escalation in the Middle East and create conditions conducive to resuming US-Iran dialogue on the Iranian nuclear program.
They affirmed the need for discussions to ensure a comprehensive settlement that takes into consideration the interests of all sides and bolsters regional and global security and stability.
Iran and the US have failed to reach an agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program despite multiple rounds of talks last year mediated by Oman, as tensions between the two countries continue to mount.
Tensions have sharply escalated in recent weeks following an Iranian crackdown on anti-government protests, prompting threats of possible US military action.
Human rights organizations say the crackdown has resulted in thousands of deaths, raising international alarm.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that an additional “armada” of American naval vessels is heading toward Iran “right now,” a day after US Central Command announced that the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group had arrived in the Middle East.
