CAIRO – 5 September 2025: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty held talks in Cyprus with President Nikos Christodoulides, discussing plans for major energy cooperation projects between both countries, as well as the war in Gaza.
During the meeting on Friday, the foreign minister underlined the importance of deepening energy cooperation, leading to the full integration of Cypriot gas fields with Egypt, in line with agreements signed during Christodoulides’s visit to Cairo this year.
Abdelatty also stressed the importance of advancing the electricity interconnection project in parallel.
He also commended the two countries’ ongoing collaboration within the framework of the trilateral cooperation mechanism with Greece, which continues to yield mutual benefits for all three nations.

During the 2025 Egypt Energy Show in February, attended by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Christodoulides, Egypt and Cyprus signed agreements to export gas from Cyprus’s offshore fields to Egypt, where it will be liquefied and re-exported to Europe.
Egypt, Cyprus and Greece are also planning the EuroAfrica Interconnector, a 1,396 km undersea cable that is set to link their grids with a total capacity of 2,000 MW, serving as an energy conduit between Africa and Europe.
Moreover, Egypt and Greece are collaborating on the GREGY project, aiming to create a 3,000 MW submarine cable spanning around 950 km, facilitating the exchange of green and cost-effective energy.
Attending the meeting, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum Karim Badawi highlighted the cooperation with Greece in bolstering energy security for both countries and supporting regional efforts to optimize the use of natural gas resources.
He stressed that the Egypt-Cyprus partnership serves as a successful model of regional cooperation in the natural gas sector, particularly in light of Egypt’s advanced infrastructure. This includes liquefaction plants and transportation networks, which can facilitate economic integration between both countries and maximize the benefit of discovered resources.
Boosting Trade
Abdelaatty reaffirmed the shared commitment to strengthening the close and longstanding relations between Egypt and Cyprus.
He expressed appreciation for the steady progress in bilateral relations across all levels, and emphasized Egypt’s aspiration to further elevate these ties, particularly in the areas of economic and trade cooperation.

Gaza War
During the meeting, Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, commending Cyprus’s historic stance toward the Palestinian cause.
The foreign minister addressed the grave consequences of the ongoing expansion of Israeli military operations in Gaza, condemning settlement expansion and forced displacement plans.
Abdelatty stressed the urgent need to create a political horizon that would lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, in line with international references, and in fulfillment of the legitimate rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.
