CAIRO - 24 January 2025: Egypt’s Ministry of Environment has launched the Hurghada Green Project, a major campaign to plant 2,000 trees of the Acacia glauca and Khaya (mahogany) species across the Red Sea’s city, the Ministry announced in a statement on Friday.
The campaign is the first activity of the project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in cooperation with the Ministry.
Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad stated, in the statement, that the campaign includes planting 1,000 trees around Hurghada University and planting 1,000 others in different places in the city.
The Minister noted that these trees have a distinctive and picturesque aesthetic appearance, as they are characterized by being evergreen and able to adapt to climate change impacts. These species of trees tolerate salinity, water scarcity, drought and high temperatures, she added, noting that they bloom in the second year of their planting.
