Egyptian law punishes publishing false news about weather by fine of up to LE 5M

CAIRO - 27 June 2023: An Egyptian law re-organizing the General Meteorological Authority stipulated that the act of publishing incorrect information related to the weather conditions on social media or any other means, will be punishewd by a fine of not less than L.E. 50,000, and not more than L.E. 5 million.
 
The law defined the role of the General Meteorological Authority, as issuing short and long-term weather and marine weather forecasts and warnings across Egyptian lands. 
 
The authority includes of stations, devices, and tools that monitor and analyze meteorological elements of all kinds, such as surface and aerial data, agricultural weather, air pollution, solar radiation, and the total amount of ozone gas in the air column, which is necessary to ensure the safety of air, sea, and land navigation, and to preserve lives and public and private property.
 
The law aims to preserve the capabilities of the state, reduce the size of the losses resulting from the publication of false news or the dissemination of inaccurate data and news related to meteorology, which has a negative impact on the economy, as well as the governance of the institutional structure, and the creation of the legislative environment conducive to the provision of meteorological services, in a way that improves quality, encourages the movement of scientific research in it, and guarantees its self-financing. It also regulates the frameworks for dealing with meteorological services and attracting foreign investments to it
