Egypt extends condolences to Turkey, Syria on victims of deadly earthquake

CAIRO – 6 February 2023: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended - in a statement -Monday condolences to Turkey and Syria on the deaths of hundreds in a destructive earthquake that hit Eastern Mediterranean.

 

The ministry also wished the injured a speedy recovery, and expressed readiness to provide any help needed to deal with the consequences of the natural disaster.

 

As reported by the CNN, Turkish Vice-President Fuat Oktay stated that the death toll hit 284 while injuries amounted to over 2,3000. As for Syria, the state TV reported at least 386 deaths, including 239 mostly in the regions of Aleppo, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus.

 

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced that the magnitude of the earthquake is 7.8. Its epicenter was 23 kilometers east of Turkey's Nurdagi lying in Gaziantep Province, and its depth was 24.1 kilometers.
