CAIRO – 16 December 2021: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan renewed the kingdom’s support to Egypt and Sudan in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam file as he held a press conference with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, in Cairo on Thursday.

The presser was held following a meeting for the political consultation and follow-up committee held in the Egyptian capital.

During the presser, the Saudi prince said the water security of both Egypt and Sudan is indivisible from the Arab water security.

Prince Faisal hailed the bilateral relations between Egypt and Saudi Arabia as firm and brotherly, adding that the leaderships of the two countries have the sincere will to move these ties to broader horizons in all fields.

Holding Libyan polls

During the press conference, Shoukry said there is a global determination that the Libyan elections are held on time on 24 December and that they truly express the will of the Libyan people.

Shoukry said Egypt is following up on the measures taken by the Libyan High National Election Commission, which come in line with a legal framework.

He added that those measures, however, have not managed to change the international and Egyptian stance regarding respecting the date of the elections set by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.

Based on this forum, the transitional phase was formulated and legitimacy was granted to the current Libyan government, Shoukry said, affirming the need to respect entitlements regarding resolving the Libyan elections and fostering the national institutions based on the Libyan will.

“We will continue cooperation and coordination with our partners in the Saudi kingdom, other Arab countries, and international partners in following up on the matter,” Shoukry said.

The Egyptian minister highlighted the necessity of the exit of mercenaries and foreign troops and fighters from Libya.

Iranian ‘destabilizing behavior’

In the press remarks, Prince Faisal said he discussed during the meeting with Shoukry the Iranian destabilizing role in the region and support of militias in a number of countries.

He affirmed the need to prevent Iran from possessing a nuclear weapon and clearing the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction.

They also underscored the importance of enhancing cooperation against terrorism and extremism, Prince Faisal added.
