292 on military trial over Sisi assassination attempts

CAIRO – 9 July 2017: Two hundred and ninety two people have been referred for trial to a military court in Egypt accused of attempting to assassinate President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, judicial sources revealed on Saturday. 151 of the defendants are currently in custody and the remaining 141 will be tried in absentia.
The suspects are accused of plotting to assassinate President Sisi and forming 22 cells affiliated to the Islamic State - Sinai Province terrorist group, which is currently operating in the northern Sinai Peninsula.

The defendants confessed that they planned two separate assassination attempts to kill Sisi, the first in Egypt and the second during a visit to Saudi Arabia.
