The army is preparing to clear rubble in the devastated southern city of Rafah to set up a new humanitarian zone intended to receive thousands of Palestinians, the broadcaster said.
Halevi’s remarks effectively corroborate the figures released by Gaza’s health ministry, which has reported over 64,800 deaths and nearly 165,000 injuries since the start of the war — a toll that Israeli authorities have repeatedly dismissed as Hamas propaganda.
Israeli army spokesperson Effie Defrin stated that Israeli forces have initiated what he described as the “first stages of the attack” on Gaza City and are now holding the outskirts of the city.
Hamas condemned Israel’s intentions to move forward with a plan for occupying Gaza City and displace scores of people stationed there, describing the move as “a major war crime.”
The “tactical pause” will start on Sunday and last from 10 AM to 8 PM local time every day until further notice, the Israeli army noted in a statement on X.
The Israeli announcement comes amid reports of starvation deaths in Gaza, including dozens of children.
The army warned it is “operating with extreme force in these areas, and these military operations will escalate, intensify, and extend westward to the city center"
Israeli soldiers have stated they were instructed to open fire on unarmed Palestinian civilians who were desperately seeking assistance at designated aid distribution points in Gaza.
The strikes come after the US announced on Sunday “obliterating” key Iranian nuclear facilities, joining a fierce war between Israel and Iran that started on 13 June and led to fatalities in both countries.
The Israeli army previously reported that five divisions are actively operating in Gaza, comprising tens of thousands of troops.
The Israeli army announced on Friday’s early morning, killing Hamas commander Hassan Farhat during a strike in Lebanon's Sidon.
“A short while ago, IDF (Israeli army) and ISA (Shabak) forces accompanied returning hostage Agam Berger as she crossed the border into Israeli territory,” the Israeli military stated in an announcement.
A delegation from the Israeli army and the Israel Security Agency/Shin Bet (Shabak) is expected to arrive in Cairo, Friday, to coordinate with the Egyptian side regarding arrangements for implementing the Gaza Ceasefire agreement, according to al Qahera news channel.
