The number of slums nationwide has been 351
Chairman of the Urban Development Fund Khaled Sediq told Al Watan newspaper Sunday that 3,033 shops had been built as part of the implementation of a national plan aimed at substituting slum markets with formal ones.
The State Information Service (SIS) released the plan set to develop Giza's Al Warraq Island, spanning over 6,360 square kilometers, at a budget of LE17.5 billion.
Earlier, an entire slum area in the same location was removed.
The area consisted of 164 flat-buildings housing a total of 618 families.
Those encompass a total of 306,000 units.
A total of 322 out of 357 unsafe areas in Egypt have been developed as part of the country’s plan to eliminate slum areas, and replace with new housing units.
There are 357 unsafe areas and 200,000 housing units are currently being developed, stated Executive Director of Slum Development Fund Khaled Seddik.
Batn Al Baqara slum area was formed in Old Cairo (Medieval Cairo) and housed 2,000 families.
The project is worth LE853 million.
A total of 50 families were transferred to new housing units in the new Asmarat city so far.
A new solar energy plant was inaugurated on Thursday at Tawasol Community School in the impoverished neighbourhood of Istabl Antar, located in the Cairo slum area of Ezbet Khairallah.
After their departure, 61 buildings were demolished.
The project is located in the second phase of Salam neighborhood eastern Cairo, and consists of two phases.
Younes affirmed that all slum areas will be eliminated by the end of 2020.
The duration set to accomplish the project is 18 months and is due to finish in June 2021.

The Cairo Governorate Municipal Authority demolished on Sunday 11 buildings in Hekr Al Sakakiny slum area after it had relocated residents to Mahrousa 1.
Unlicensed buildings and huts are demolished after the evacuation of the residents.
The buildings were evacuated once residents reported cracks in the mountain.
