As the spring season begins, the desert of Matrouh has transformed into a hunting ground for "Desert Gold," the rare truffle known locally as Terfas. These fungal tubers, which grow deep beneath the soil following autumn thunderstorms, are currently fetching prices as high as 3,000 EGP per kilogram.
