Criminal Procedures Law
El-Sisi approved the bill after the House of Representatives endorsed amendments to several articles that he had previously objected to.
The revised articles, the Presidency stated on Wednesday, address the reasons for those objections and strengthen safeguards for the protection of rights and public freedoms.
The Presidency added that the review is also needed to expand alternatives to pre-trial detention, minimizing reliance on it, and removing ambiguities in legal drafting that could result in multiple interpretations or enforcement challenges, according to the appeals.
The prime minister Madbouly commended the efforts exerted by the parliament and government over years to chart the provisions of the draft bill in a balanced way.
The House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Hanafi Gebali, opened its sixth legislative session earlier in the day.
Egypt’s House of Representatives approved, Monday, Article 123 of the draft Criminal Procedures Law, which specifies the periods of pretrial detention, so that it may not exceed four months in the preliminary investigation phase in misdemeanors, and twelve months in felonies.
