CAIRO – 31 May 2018: English defender John Terry announced on Wednesday that he will leave Aston Villa after their failure to win promotion to the first division.

“Today I part ways with Aston Villa Football Club. I’m very proud to have had the opportunity to play and captain this great and huge club,” Terry posted on his Instagram account.

The defender joined Aston Villa in the summer of 2017 after achieving the Premier League title with his childhood club, Chelsea, where he played since he was 15.

Aston Villa thanked Terry, who was the club’s captain last season, saying, “We would like to place on record our most sincere thanks for the effort and professionalism he showed with us last season.”

Terry failed to lead the team to win Premier League promotion, as they lost the Championship playoffs 1-0 to Fulham.

Aston Villa’s statement added, "We hope he looks back on his time with Villa fondly and we wish him the very best as his career moves forward."

Terry did not reveal his next step with football.
