CAIRO – 16 March 2018: Spain is again the country with the most teams in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, the draw will take place on Friday in Nyon, the home of UEFA.

With the qualification of Barcelona against Chelsea and before the historic Sevilla against Manchester United and the imposing Real Madrid against PSG, Spanish football returns to command in the main club competition in Europe, ahead of England, with two representatives, Liverpool and Manchester City, as five teams have qualified to the last 16 but three of them were ruled out (Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur), and Italy, with two teams, Juventus and AS Roma.

It is the sixth consecutive time that Spain has three teams in the quarter-final hype. Last season Barcelona, Atletico and Real Madrid, who lifted their 12th European Cup against Juventus, were among the top eight teams.
The same Spanish teams were in 2015-16, in which the championship went to real madrid defeating Atlético de Madrid.

The teams also met in the 2014/15 quarterfinals at Madrid, Atlético and Barça, although in that edition it was the set then of Luis Enrique who raised the trophy against Juventus; and also in 2013-14, again with Madrid crowned champion, against those of Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid’s coach.
In the 2012/13 season the draw for Madrid, Barça and Málaga featured. Malaga was defeated against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter final. Dortmund repeated the act against Real Madrid in the semi-final but they tasted the bitter taste of loss against Bayern Munich, which defeated Barcelona in the semi-final, in the final.

Last season there were five Spanish teams in the Champions League, although only Madrid, Barça, Sevilla and Atlético passed through the group stage, because Villarreal fell in the first round against Monaco.
