CAIRO – 17 January 2018: Spanish international David Villa believes in his chances to participate with the Spanish national team in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“I know that the manager, Julen Lopetegui, is watching me and that I'm one of the attacking candidates; what I will do is play well and train hard at the highest level to get the best out of myself," Villa told Efe on Wednesday.

Villa, 36, earned a call to play again with the Spanish national team on August 2017 following three years of international retirement after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but he picked up an injury during the training, which inhibited his comeback.

Villa added, “Injuries always seem to come at a bad time, but it was even more so in that case. But the reaction of people was very nice though. It was a nice experience, even though it ended badly with the injury."

Villa wore Spain’s national team jersey in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cup tournaments, and he played a great role in the 2010 World Cup victory with the national team, scoring five goals.
