CAIRO – 3 December 2017: Atletico Madrid’s Argentine manager, Diego Simeone, was happy after a stunning comeback by his players to defeat Real Sociedad 2-1 after being down 1-0 in the first half.
“We must show pride, intensity and courage. We are happy to have come through a difficult match. It was a struggle in the second half; beyond some mistakes, we showed determination,” Simeone told the press after the game.
Willian Jose opened the scoring for Real Sociedad through a penalty in the 27th minute. After the goal, Atletico players squandered their many chances to score an equalizing goal and ended the first half down 1-0.
Simeone revealed some of what he told his players at half time, saying, “It was the way I always tell my players to play; the response of the players was fantastic. I prefer to win or lose by playing in the way we did in the second half."
In the second half, Saul Niguiz dribbled past four Sociedad players and made a cross to Felipe Luis, who placed it into the back of the net to score the equalizing goal for Atletico.
Atletico Madrid won the game thanks to a late goal from their French striker, Antoine Griezmann, only two minutes before the final whistle.
