CAIRO – 9 November 2017: Portuguese former International winger, Luis Figo, believes that Catalonia is a part of Spain and is against Catalonian claims for independence.

“Catalonia is Spain, I know Spain and Catalonia is Spain, it is part of Spain. We are at the moment all living together and that is how it should be," Figo told the press on Thursday.

Figo, 45, spent 10 years in Spain as a player. He represented Barcelona for five years before moving to the capital to play for Real Madrid for another five years.

On the contrary, Figo stands against the talks of the union between Spain and Portugal. He said, “Portugal has always been a nation that is independent of Spain and I don't think there will be any union with Spain.”

Figo added, “We are part of the Iberian Peninsula and we have excellent relations but each country is different."

Figo revealed his opinion about Barcelona and Real Madrid’s current situation in the Spanish league, he said, “Barcelona have the advantage at the moment, but La Liga has a long way to go and there are still a lot of games to be played."

Barcelona leads the Spanish League with 31 points after 11 games. They are eight points ahead of their rivals, Real Madrid.
