CAIRO, 18 November 2025: The Egyptian national team claimed third place in the Al Ain International Friendly Tournament after defeating Cape Verde 2–0 on penalties, following a 1–1 draw in regular time at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in the UAE city of Al Ain.

Cape Verde took an early lead in the 7th minute when Garry Rodrigues converted a penalty, capitalizing on the team’s strong start. Egypt responded in the second half through Omar Marmoush, who produced a moment of individual brilliance to level the score in the 56th minute.

Goalkeeper Bruno Varela had earlier denied Marmoush with a powerful strike from distance, keeping Cape Verde ahead before the break.

Head coach Hossam Hassan introduced several substitutions in the second half to boost Egypt’s rhythm, bringing on Salah Mohsen, Mahmoud Zalaka, and later Mostafa Shobeir in the final moments — a change that sparked visible frustration from goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy on the bench.

With the match ending level, both teams headed to a penalty shootout. Egypt converted two attempts through Hossam Abdelmaguid and Mohamed Hamdy, while Marmoush and Osama Faisal missed their kicks. Cape Verde failed to score any of their four penalties, with Ederson, Monteiro, Kevin Lelene, and Ryan Mendes all off target.

The victory comes as Egypt continues preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place from December 21 to January 18. Both Egypt and Cape Verde have already secured qualification for the World Cup.
