23 July 2017:Mali defeated Egypt in AfroBasket U-16 final 76-65 to win the tournament for the first time, while Egyptian team lost their first match in the competition.

Egypt started the game trying to prove their dominance in the competition they won three times before, but Mali stopped all Egypt’s key players’ attempts in the game.

Egypt couldn’t stop Mali masterminds Omar Ballo and Siriman Kanoute, who dominated the match and had the upper hand in the game.

Mali continued their amazing run in the tournament, winning the title without losing any game. They won six group stage matches and the semi final before beating Egypt in the final.

Egypt and Mali both qualified for the 2018 Basketball World Cup in Argentina.
This is Mali’s first time winning the competition, after losing the final against Egypt twice in 2009 and 2015.

Mauritius hosted eight African teams in the U-16 Basketball African Championship from July 13-22.
