CAIRO-24 January 2022: Al Ahly’s opening game of the CAF Champions League group stage against Sudan’s Al Merrikh is postponed, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Monday.

“The move was necessitated by the participation of Al Ahly SC in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled to be played in Abu Dhabi from 03-12 February 2022.” CAF statement said.

The game was initially scheduled on 11-12 February and it was moved to 5 March at 9:00 PM (Cairo Time).

Al Ahly have been handed a tough group in the competition alongside Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and the Sudanese giants, Al Hilal and Al Merrikh.

The Reds have achieved back-to-back Champions League titles and they hope to lift the trophy for the third time in a row for the first time in the club’s history.

The Red Devils are currently preparing for the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup in the UAE for the seventh time in history.

The Cairo giants are going to the UAE without many key players, who are participating with their national teams in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
