CAIRO-18 October 2021: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes that his team’s Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah is one of the main contenders for the Ballon d’or this season after what he has done for the English giants.

However, Klopp believes that Salah does not have the upper hand in the race if the award is given based on the trophies he has won.

“I have no idea how you win the Ballon d’Or. If it’s about being in the Champions League final and scoring the most goals, it may be difficult, but if it’s on the form of the last two years, then he has a chance. Internally he always got the recognition, externally I don’t know.” Klopp said on Monday.

Liverpool finished the 2020-2021 season without silverware after being knocked out of the Champions League from the quarter-finals stage and they struggled in the league but managed to secure a top four spot in the last fixtures of the season.

Klopp added “After the two goals he has scored people, all of a sudden, think he could be [the best in the world]. He has scored like this before and has performed on the highest level for many years. He will do it again and again. Whatever you want to write about him, do it, he deserves it, but now we prepare for Atletico.”

The Egyptian winger netted his 104th goal in the Premier League on Saturday against Watford, equaling the record of Didier Drogba as the African player with most goals in the English top division.

Also, he is now leading the top scorers list in the league with 7 goals and he comes second in the list of the best assist providers with four assists.
