CAIRO-18 August 2021: “Here they are, the champions of the league. Here they are, the champions of the league.” That is all what you can hear inside Zamalek’s dressing room at 30 June Stadium on Tuesday night after the White Knights took a huge step towards securing the long-awaited league title.

Zamalek maintained their strong performance in the league this season and defeated Wadi Degla 1-0 thanks to a brilliant header from Marwan Hamdy, giving the boys of Mit Okba their 7th straight victory.

Of course, the victory was very good news for Zamalek players, who did not know that the best of the night is yet to come but this time from Suez as the second-placed, Al Ahly, failed to find the target across the 95 minutes against El Gaish, losing another two points in the fierce title race, extending the gap with Zamalek to four points.

The White Knights are only five points away from their first league title since 2015 while the Red Eagles need to win all their remaining matches and wait Zamalek to struggle in two matches.

“We did not win the title yet. We still have three games to play.” Zamalek’s interim president Hussein Labib said after celebrating with the players the victory over Wadi Degla.

Everyone expected that the title will be decided in the last day of the league campaign on 27 August but Tuesday’s result could push the date earlier.
