During the holy month of Ramadan, we complete all of its requirements, fasting, praying, and doing charity work. It’s the perfect time to take a pause and ask ourselves: who do we want to be by the end of this month? Ramadan is not only about giving up food from sunrise till sunset; rather, it is a holistic experience that helps us deepen our spirituality and nourish our souls
The Core of Fasting
Fasting is a practice rooted in the teachings of the Quran. This month, Muslims around the world come together to share the same experience.
Aside from the physical challenge, it is a spiritual challenge as well, aimed at testing our self-control and willpower. It’s also about appreciating what we have and feeling what the less fortunate people go through, and with that, we have more empathy, sympathy, and learn to be more kind, gracious, and give back to the community.
So, how can we embrace the positivity from this month?
By remembering that each moment of hunger and thirst is a chance to reflect and connect to those who are less fortunate and empathize with their struggles. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The fast is a shield. So, when one of you is fasting, let him not speak obscenely or raise his voice in anger. If someone fights or insults him, let him say, ‘I am fasting’” (Bukhari). This teaching encourages us to use this time to purify our hearts and minds, focusing on kindness and patience.
Bonding Time: A Month of Togetherness & Forgiveness
Ramadan is a time when the family sit on one table, breaks their fast together, whether with family, friends, or even colleagues. That’s the aspect of Ramadan, it acts as a beautiful reminder that we are not alone. It is a month of support.
It’s about reconnecting with distant relatives whom we haven’t had the chance to meet up with due to circumstances, it’s about sharing joy, opening up, and letting go of any past grudges or animosity.
Setting Your Intentions
Since we are still in the early days of this holy month, we should set goals and set the lessons we want to carry forward.
Plan what we want to achieve and the person we want to be, not during the month of Ramadan but throughout the year.
Acts of Giving: give back to those in need.
Seeking under-the-radar homeless shelters, orphanages, and food banks to make sure that everyone is well fed, well dressed, and is in a safe place to stay.
You can have a monthly goal of donating to different charities all year, when you can afford it, or give back unused clothes, toys, books, etc.
Sincere prayers: finding quiet moments for a conversation with Allah.
Dedicating time each week to grow your inner self.
The habits we nourish will stay with us and be a foundation for a more enriched life and soul.
Well, as we know, life can be a bit demanding, and we get caught up with so many engagements that sometimes, we forget to pray on time.
To combat that, download a praying app that reminds you to pray on time.
Let this be a month of transformation. Embrace it is a period to renew our faith and strengthen our relationships with our family and loved ones, and get to understand our relationship with God. In this sacred month, may we find peace and joy and renew our purpose in life and our connection to our faith.
Ramadan Mubarak!
