Ramadan isn’t just a month for fasting, it’s a month of transformation and evolving. The holy month, while it gets us closer to God, opens a window of opportunity to pause and reflect, inviting us to embark on an inner journey of self-discovery, compassion, and building a deeper connection with ourselves and our faith. As we fast, reflect, and pray, let’s make this month a time to nurture new habits and become a better version of ourselves. In a series of articles, we’ll explore how we can harness the spirit of Ramadan to develop new habits, one habit at a time. Today, we talk about Discipline.

While self-discipline is innate for some, that doesn’t mean others cannot acquire it. Ramadan brings discipline and self-control into focus. It goes without saying that fasting from dawn until sunset is such a big challenge that requires a lot of self-control mentally, physically, and emotionally. While done purely for religious reasons, it poses a question: if we can be disciplined for a month, why not for an entire year or a lifetime?

When we come to think of it, we manage to find the discipline in ourselves when we have a goal or a target, a real, strong reason to stick to. Simply put, if you managed to do it once, you can do it again. Summon all your will to take that level of discipline and apply it to every aspect of your life. Discipline in achieving wellness-related goals, whether getting in shape, building stamina, or looking after yourself.
Discipline in managing your finances, whether saving more money, a plan to buy that house, or even payback a debt. Discipline in managing your time to achieve your goals, whether by saying no to unnecessary commitments or favors, spending less time on social media and more on being productive. Discipline comes in so many different ways, and there is not an area where discipline is not really needed.

Discipline is not only for the holy month of Ramadan; it is rather an integral part of life. One of the things that draws the line between those who make it in life and those who feel life has passed them by is discipline. Let this month be a time when you can discover how you have it in you to do things differently, and remember, it is never too late to build new habits.
