Skincare is a very broad topic, and with more products coming out more frequently, it can be hard for beginners to get the hang of it. Establishing a proper and beneficial skincare routine requires an understanding of your skin type, its concerns, and needs so that you buy the right products for you. However, you won’t get the maximum benefits of these products if you do not apply them in the correct order.

Why Applying Products in the Correct Order Matters
Every product in your skincare routine has a certain job to do. Applying your products correctly ensures that your skin gets the maximum benefit and that each product penetrates the skin at the level it should. If you don’t pay attention to the order, you will not see the best results. While a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen are the basic most essential, there are more to add to your routine. As a rule of thumb and before we get deeper into details, apply your products from the thinnest to thickest consistency

The Correct Order to Apply Your Products
Step 1: Cleanser
The first and most important step of your skincare routine is cleansing both day and night. In the morning you can use a gentle cleanser while at night you need a deeper cleanser to wash off the makeup, oil, and dirt. For night time you can consider also a cleansing balm before your facial wash to make sure you dissolve any makeup residues.

Step 2: Toner
A lot of people skip this step though it is important. Using a toner in the morning and at night removes any last traces of makeup or dirt, calms and soothes your skin, restores the pH balance, and prepares your skin for the next step of your skincare routine.

Step 3: Serums/Treatments
In the morning time apply an antioxidant serum such as vitamin C serum that keeps your skin protected from the damages caused by pollution. Hyaluronic acid serums are also good options to keep your skin moisturized and plump throughout the day. For night time switch to treatments such as retinol peeling, chemical peeling products, or acne treatment just make sure to avoid the eye area and to use sunscreen the next morning because such treatments can make your skin more sensitive to sun damage.

Step 4: Eye Cream
The skin around the eyes is very delicate and this is why it is among the first areas to show signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, the extended hours we spend in front of the laptop and on our smartphones make our eyes look tired. Eye cream is a very important step in the skincare routine to revive and rejuvenate the skin around the eyes.  For application, tap the eye cream gently around the eye or if your eye cream comes with a rollerball then massage the product gently in an outward direction towards your face temple. An eye cream can be applied morning and night.

Step 5: Moisturizer
You need to moisturize your skin day and night, especially night time because this is when the skin goes into restoration and repairing mode. It is important that you buy a moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type, also, switch your moisturizer with the change of season for instance opt for deep moisturizers in winter and go for lighter ones in summer.

Step 6: Sunscreen (morning only)
Your entire skincare routine won’t be of big difference if you don’t conclude it with high-quality sunscreen. Regardless of skin type, diet, or lifestyle, everyone needs sunscreen. It is worth mentioning that sunscreen is not to be used only in summer but throughout the year. You should even use it at home if your place is exposed to a lot of sunlight.
