CAIRO - 26 July 2022: Egypt's skies will witness the peak of the Delta Aquarids meteor shower next Thursday, with the number of meteors reaching about 20 meteors per hour in dark places, and it can be seen with the naked eye provided the sky is dark and free of clouds.

Ashraf Tadros, a professor of astronomy at the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, said in a statement Monday, that the Delta Aquarids meteor shower is caused by the entry of the remnants of the wreckage of comets into the Earth’s atmosphere from July 12 to August 23, and it peaks on Thursday night and dawn.

He explained that this year the moon will be at the peak of the Delta Aquarids meteor shower, making it easier to see the meteors, and what may increase the visibility of meteors is its overlap with the Perseid meteor shower, which will reach its climax on the night of August 13th.

Dr. Ashraf Tadros explained that the annual meteor showers arise when the Earth passes while revolving around the sun through dense gatherings of dust scattered along the orbits of comets and asteroids, as it collides with the highest atmosphere of the Earth and burns at an altitude between 70 and 100 km.

"It appears to us as a strip of light, and this leads to the occurrence of meteor showers that recur on an annual basis," he added.

He stressed that the appearance of these meteors in the sky does not have any harm to people or their daily activity on Earth, as their observations are interesting and are loved by amateur astronomers and those interested in astronomy and space sciences to follow and photograph them.
