CAIRO – 21 December 2020: A committee from the Fayoum Governorate and the governorate’s antiquities area, monitored on Monday the solar alignment phenomenon on the Holy of Holies in the Qasr Qarun Temple.

 

Due to COVID-19, Fayoum Governorate cancelled the celebrations for this occasion in the current year, as part of the precautionary measures taken to battle the pandemic.

 

Mohamed el-Touni, the official spokesman for Fayoum Governorate, explained that the celebrations this year will limited to documentation and filming by the Governorate only, noting that the emergence of the second wave of COVID-19 was the reason for canceling many of the celebrations in the governorate, including the celebration of the Solar alignment phenomenon where the sun rays illuminate Qasr Qarun Temple.

Qasr Qarun Temple is located on the southwestern side of Lake Qarun and dates back to the Greco-Roman period.

 

The phenomenon of the sun illuminating the temple on the morning of the twenty-first of December of each year is a unique astronomical architectural phenomenon, where the sun also illuminates the Holy of Holies inside the temple coincided with the beginning of the winter solstice.
