CAIRO – 28 May 2017: Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Enany announced the approval of the registration of St. Eugene Church in Port Said Governorate on Egypt's Heritage List for Islamic and Coptic Monuments, in a statement on Saturday.

El-Enany’s announcement followed the approval of the decision by the Supreme Council of Antiquities Management, headed by former Antiquities Minister Mamdouh Eldamaty.

The church was built in 1890 over the site of an earlier place of worship constructed in 1867 out of wood on a piece of land donated by the Suez Canal Company to the Franciscan Church.

On May 13 this year, archaeologists at Cairo University discovered catacombs, including 18 non-royal mummies, in Minya Governorate south of Cairo.
