CAIRO – 25 August 2020: Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker announced the existence of a computer program for prepaid meters that is programmed to calculate consumption according to the announced prices of electricity strips, stressing that there are no technical problems with the system of prepaid meters.

Shaker added that prepaid meters are distinguished by the fact that they do not need any human intervention and are fully functional, pointing out that some citizens 'complaints about withdrawing the meter balance at the end of each month are mostly caused by some citizens' lack of understanding of how to calculate consumption with a prepaid counter.

The minister pointed out that any citizen has the right to file a complaint in the event that there is doubt about the method of calculating his monthly consumption, indicating that the users of the prepaid counter can obtain full details of consumption and the balance that has been deducted and shipped.

Shaker added that the total number of prepaid meters has reached nearly 9 million prepaid meters so far, pointing out that it is intended to install 2 million prepaid meters annually until the completion of the conversion of all traditional meters to prepaid ones.

He said that the users of prepaid meters are among the most beneficiaries of this system because they pay the value of actual consumption only for them and there is no human element interference in this system, which guarantees the right of the citizen and the state together.

Spokesperson Ayman Hamza said in 2019 that the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy targets to substitute all 30 million traditional meters across the country with prepaid ones within 6 years.
