CAIRO - 14 April 2026: Egypt is set to launch its local wheat harvest season on Wednesday, with the government aiming to procure around 5 million tons from farmers during the current marketing season, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.

The state has fixed the procurement price at LE 2,500 per ardeb of local wheat, with farmer payments scheduled to be disbursed within 48 hours at maximum, in an effort to ensure rapid settlement and encourage delivery to state collection points.

The Ministry of Agriculture said cultivated wheat areas this season have expanded significantly, exceeding 3.7 million feddans, up by about 600,000 feddans compared to the previous year. The expansion reflects ongoing efforts to boost domestic production and strengthen food security.

Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk said improved productivity levels this season are the result of intensive research efforts and the introduction of higher-yield seed varieties, alongside the adoption of modern agricultural practices. Average yields are estimated at 18 to 20 ardebs per feddan.

Wheat procurement operations are scheduled to start on April 15 and continue until August 15, covering the full harvest and supply season.

The minister directed the Agricultural Mechanization Sector to ensure full readiness ahead of the harvest, including the availability of harvesting machinery and threshing equipment. He also stressed the importance of providing these services at reduced rates to help minimize post-harvest losses and ease the burden on farmers.

He further instructed agricultural directorates across governorates to ensure logistical readiness and provide technical support to farmers throughout the harvesting and delivery process, while addressing any operational bottlenecks to maintain smooth supply flows.

Farouk also emphasized the need for proper maintenance and fair distribution of agricultural machinery, particularly in high-production areas, to facilitate the transport of wheat to silos and storage facilities and prevent congestion at collection centers.

The ministry said field monitoring will be intensified, with researchers and extension officers conducting regular inspections to ensure compliance with technical standards and to provide on-site support during harvesting operations.

In addition, local operations rooms will be established across all governorates, linked to a central operations room at the ministry headquarters, to monitor procurement activities in real time in coordination with the Ministry of Supply and relevant authorities.
